Spotlight - Patricia Wentworth

this one comes right after Latter End in the Miss Silver series, and based on that previous book, and what's going on in this one, Wentworth seems to have been at her peak for writing riveting scenarios that lead to a corpse. this book has some vile, sordid people in it - well, this Porlock creep, for sure - and there is a miasma of evil and arrogance wafting from Porlock that infects everything and everyone involved, and which makes the book compelling. Porlock sure has a lot of nasty irons in the fire, but if he's not careful, someone's going to bash him over the head with an iron, or just throw him in the fire. terrific Mystery novel, so far.
